Full disclosure: James Sherr is a former teacher of mine at Oxford. His course on Soviet and post-Soviet defence policy was instrumental in forming much of my thinking on the region. I disagree with him frequently and fundamentally on some issues, but I think he is a deeply serious and clear thinking person. Having said all that, go read his article in today's Sunday Telegraph. It spells out far more clearly and accurately whats going on and whats at stake than I could ever hope to.
